How to persuade companies

First the good news: As long as you have graduated from secondary school, you have a chance to obtain an apprenticeship or a job in the metal construction industry. But in order to make a good impression, to excite your colleagues and to make a successful start, you should be good at working with your hands, enjoy working in a team, be flexible – and of course enjoy working with metal. If you are also good at technology and handicrafts and have a good flair for art, maths or physics, nothing will stand in your way when attempting to persuade companies to offer you a position. But don't worry: Even if your marks weren't very good in these disciplines, you still have a chance. It is important for you to be able to explain to the decision-makers in the company why you are so deeply interested in the job or apprenticeship.

Are you a trained specialist or project manager who is looking for a (new) position in the metal construction industry? Or are you just starting out and are interested in an apprenticeship? Then the fastest route to your happiness is our application portal. You can make companies notice you with just a click. You will then be contacted and soon you will surely already be having your first talks about your new job or apprenticeship. What's more: You have good opportunities in the metal construction industry even if you are a lateral entrant from a different background!

Apprenticeship

What your options are

An apprenticeship in metal construction makes sense. Why? Because you are needed in this field. Because there is a good future in these jobs. And because you will have a great influence on all of our lives. Find out more here.

In general it can be said that you can apply to be a metal fabricator with any school leaving certificate. Depending on the apprenticeship, you may also require an intermediate school leaving certificate. You will find the precise requirements in our job profiles. The hurdles for entry are therefore low.

That is the fundamental requirement for your apprenticeship to be fun at all. What's more: Pure muscle power is no longer required because technical innovations and machines will support you in your work. But you should still be eager to pitch in and lend a hand. An apprenticeship in metal construction normally takes three and a half years. After that you will have many more opportunities to expand your capabilities. Here you will find out what steps in your career could still await you.

The general procedure
You will receive dual education for three and a half years. You will be taught the theoretical knowledge at the vocational school. Within the company you will then apply what you have learned in practice – always under the instruction of experienced colleagues. You will then take the first part of the apprenticeship certification exam before the end of your second year of training. You will be fully trained once you have completed the second apprenticeship certification exam.

What awaits you in the apprenticeship? Quite a lot.
Labour and collective bargaining law will also be explained to you for any recognised trade. Safety and health protection on the job will be on your agenda. But naturally you will also properly dive into the craft itself. Whether you are training to be a mechatronics engineer, metal fabricator or warehouse operative, the contents of the apprenticeship will naturally vary greatly depending on the recognised trade. In our job profiles you will find further information about what your tasks will be, how the apprenticeship will proceed and what precise requirements you must fulfil.

The easiest way is to visit our application portal. You can search by apprenticeship or vacancy in metal fabrication. If you enter your post code, we will show you jobs in your area.

The fastest way is definitely via our application portal. With just one click you can attract the attention of businesses in your area. After your “nudge”, the company will get in touch with you and you can talk to them directly. Have you tried it yet?

Your application should normally include the following: a cover letter, your CV, certified copies of certificates and, if available, references and work placement certificates. A tip for your cover letter: say why you are applying for this precise job and why you are so interested in it. By the way, you can complete the first step on our application portal without a cover letter. Just give them a nudge to register your interest and the companies will write to you. Give it a go!

Are you good with your hands and interested in technology? Can you imagine working with metal? Do you like the sound of working flexibly in a team? Then it is the right fit for you. Our tip: start with a placement – that is the best way to find out if metal fabrication is right for you.

After you have successfully completed your training, you become a journey-level worker and you receive your journeyperson's diploma. Committed and competent journey-level workers then have the best chance of getting a permanent job. This is because most companies start to plan who to take on during the training period.

Of course you still have a lot to learn as a journey-level worker. You can gain on-the-job experience or obtain further qualifications and acquire specialist knowledge through courses of study. Do you want more responsibility, for example in a leadership role? Then you have the option to complete your master craftsperson qualification or an undergraduate degree. You are in charge of your own future in the metal fabrication industry!
